Desiderative あらまほし

あらまほしcomp. An expression that combines the imperfect form 未然形 of あり and the desiderative auxiliary verb まほし. Literally, it would mean "to want (something) to exist". In context, it is used as an adjective expressing desire: That which I want.

• すこしの事にも先達はあらまほしきことなり。With regards to even small matters, one wants (the gudance) of predecessors.〔徒然 52〕
